Another High School Sports Season Ends

The season officially ended with Putnam Valley High School’s loss in the baseball state quarterfinals, although there are still individual track-and-field national invitationals for some qualified athletes.

So that puts the wrap on athletics. The next uniform these kids will put on is a cap and gown.

Or is it really over?

Technically, the 2026-27 season doesn’t begin until August, but there have been informal workouts in football, soccer, and other sports. That includes officially recognized camps and passing drills in football – which has become a year-round endeavor.

Ah, a coach’s work is never done. Neither is that of the players – all done in the heat and humidity of summer. That just shows the diligence and dedication to prepare and get better.

High school sports really never ends. Let’s just say it’s interrupted for a bit. It’s a slight break – especially for multi-sport athletes. But that doesn’t mean the work stops. All parties involved realize the effort it takes. It’s not just a hobby or a diversion or “something to do.”

That’s why I admire our high school athletes and coaches… Nobody sees the labor they put in during the offseason.

Even when the season is over.
