Bears Take Down Hornets

SHRUB OAK – Sure, the Lakeland High School football team might have been resting some of its players for the Section 1 tournament, but the Hornets are still one of the top programs in the section and drew the No. 2 seed in the Class A playoffs.

So it still makes what the Brewster High School football team did mighty impressive.

The Bears scored 42 consecutive points enroute to a 42-7 win over Lakeland.

And this was a 7-7 game in the third quarter until the Bears went berserk, including an interception return for a touchdown. In fact, it was little more than a week ago that Coach Ryan Cleary was bemoaning the fate of his team after Brewster had played well but still ended up on the short end of several games.

Not this time.

The Bears, who had won just once in the regular season entering the game, scored three touchdowns in a 7-minute span in the third quarter to break it open. Mikey Subin scored on the interception return and also had a 44-yard touchdown run.

Earlier in the game, Brewster set the tone with a red zone stop on downs and, moments later, an interception on its own 10-yard line for two big defensive plays. Later on, the Bears stopped the Hornets on the 2-yard line.

Maybe it wasn’t an upset at all – just domination.
