Putnam County Office for Senior Resources Deputy Director Marlene Barrett is poised to become the next director of the department, succeeding Michael Cunningham, who is retiring after many years of service.

“Marlene Barrett has been an integral part of the Office for Senior Resources for over a decade,” said County Executive Kevin Byrne, who made the nomination. “Her experience, dedication, and leadership make her an excellent choice to lead OSR as we continue to provide high-quality programs and services for Putnam County’s senior community. I thank Director Michael Cunningham for his exceptional service and am confident Marlene will build upon his legacy.”

Barrett joined OSR as a caseworker in 2011 and has worked directly with Putnam County’s senior population to address their needs and concerns. Her consistent commitment and skill in serving the community led to her promotion to deputy director in April 2023. In this role, she has helped oversee the department’s operations, programs, and initiatives to support the growing needs of seniors throughout the county.

“It has been an honor to work for OSR and serve our senior community for over a decade,” said Barrett. “I am deeply grateful to County Executive Byrne for this nomination and to Director Cunningham for his mentorship and leadership. If confirmed, I will continue to work tirelessly to ensure our seniors receive the resources and care they deserve.”

Legislator Amy Sayegh, chairwoman of the Health Committee, called Barrett an outstanding choice for the role.

“Her deep knowledge of OSR and her passion for serving our senior residents make her uniquely qualified to lead the department,” said Sayegh. “I look forward to working with her as she continues to enhance the lives of seniors in Putnam County.”

The nomination is subject to confirmation by a majority vote of the Putnam County Legislature, as required by the county charter.

The Office for Senior Resources provides critical services to Putnam’s senior residents, including nutrition programs, transportation, and social activities aimed at promoting independence, wellness, and community engagement.
