Michael Plotkin has been appointed the new superintendent of the Carmel Central School District, effective Oct. 17.
According to the school board, after an extensive search, Plotkin emerged as the top candidate by demonstrating a proven track record of educational leadership, a commitment to student success, and a “real understanding of the district’s needs.”
Plotkin is a Holmes resident whose three daughters are Carmel High School graduates, and whose son currently attends CHS. An educator for the past 30 years, he taught high school social studies in New York City and Chappaqua for more than a decade before taking on leadership positions. Most recently, he served as principal of Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School in Croton-on-Hudson.
The fact that Plotkin is no stranger to the Carmel community is a tremendous asset, said Board of Education President Melissa Orser.
“Mr. Plotkin brings with him many years of experience in education, but equally important he is one of our own,” she said. “A longtime resident, involved community member, and dedicated father, his deep roots in our community combined with his professional expertise give him a unique perspective and a genuine commitment to the success of every student in our district.”
Plotkin’s vision and path for the district align closely with the board’s goals, according to Orser. “We are confident that under his leadership, we will have stability, strength, and a dedicated champion for our students, staff, and families,” she said.
He holds a school district administrators certificate from Teachers College, Columbia University, as well as a master of arts and bachelor of arts degree in history from City University of New York.
As superintendent, Plotkin said he plans to be fully accessible, dedicate himself to the service of the community and the children, and remain laser-focused on what is best for the students.
“I am deeply familiar with the Carmel Central School District’s strengths and challenges,” he said. “I understand the importance of maintaining high academic standards, supporting social-emotional growth, and ensuring that all students are prepared for success in a rapidly changing world. I also recognize the need to build trust, foster unity, and celebrate the unique identity of Carmel’s schools.”
The school board appointed Plotkin on Sept. 16 with a unanimous vote.
