CARMEL – It was two victories last week for the combined swim team of Mahopac, Putnam Valley, and Carmel. The team hosted Harrison, earning a 93-70 victory.

MPVC got off to a strong start, taking first and third in the 200-yard medley relay. Chloe Forger, Elisabeth Knuth, Kira Furfaro, and Keira Troccoli finished first, while Olivia Brady, Laura Svrcek, Savannah Jarrett, and Adelina Loza took third.

“It was a strong team performance, with swimmers contributing throughout the meet and continuing to build momentum as the season progresses,” said Coach Erica Burlenski.

The second meet and victory was even more impressive. MPVC had to spot Rye a 10-0 lead right off the bat because the Garnets had a diving team and MPVC did not. But it still battled back to earn a 95-88 win.

It came down to the last relay.

MPVC needed to take first place in the 400-yard relay to secure the victory. Furfaro started the event strong and touched first, but Rye quickly built a lead. Adelina Loza and Alyza Laufman kept MPVC within striking distance before Troccoli dove in for the final leg.

“It was an incredible display of determination and teamwork,” said Burlenski. “This was not an easy meet, but the girls never stopped fighting until the very last touch of the wall. Every point mattered, and every swimmer played an important role in putting the team in position to win. The comeback against Rye was a true team effort and a memorable finish for MPVC.”

Girls’ Soccer

CARMEL – You don’t get any extra credit for winning a rivalry game, but maybe the Carmel High School girls’ soccer team should get an asterisk for this one – for its defensive prowess.

The Rams pitched a shutout and beat Brewster, 1-0. Ava Connors scored the only goal of the game and Macey Rivard had the assist.

Tuckahoe 3, Putnam Valley 0 – The Tigers couldn’t muster much of an offense in this league loss, nor could they contain Brooke Matarazzo. She was involved in all three scores with two goals and an assist.

Field Hockey

PUTNAM VALLEY – Goals in high school field hockey are usually hard to come by. But not for Belina Lajqi and Putnam Valley. At least, not recently.

In an offensive display of fireworks, the Tigers beat Walter Panas, 9-1. Lajqi scored four times.

Brewster 6, Edgemont 2 – Giuliana Drajaj and Kaitlyn Flanagan each tallied two goals apiece to pace the Bears.

Girls’ Volleyball

PUTNAM VALLEY – Natalie Boyer was apparently in a giving mood, and her teammates were the beneficiaries. Boyer handed out 31 assists as PV beat Hastings, 3-2. The Tigers won 26-28, 19-25, 25-21, 27-25, and 15-13.
