Lifelong Carmel resident Jake D’Angelo – a construction manager and Republican activist – recently announced his candidacy for Putnam County legislator in District 5, which represents portions of the towns of Carmel and Kent.
At 23 years old, D’Angelo is mounting a primary challenge against incumbent Greg Ellner, the current vice chairman of the Legislature.
An active participant in conservative politics and a recent honoree of the New York State Young Republicans, D’Angelo’s campaign is centered on “restoring integrity, transparency, and fiscal responsibility to county government.”
He promises a “fresh, bold, honest” approach.
“This campaign isn’t about politics-as-usual – it’s about results,” he said. “Our community deserves a leader who shows up, listens, and delivers. I’m running to put families first, to cut wasteful spending, and to end the backroom chaos that’s embarrassed this Legislature.”
D’Angelo’s decision to run follows a number of “controversial” votes from Ellner – including his vote to override County Executive Kevin Byrne’s veto of legislative pay raises.
“In 2022, Ellner ran on ‘No Pay Raises for Politicians,’ only to do the exact opposite once elected,” said D’Angelo. “He’s undermined transparency, alienated fellow Republicans, and shown up for headlines instead of hardworking families. Enough is enough.”
D’Angelo has been involved in local Republican circles for years, serving on both the Carmel and Putnam GOP committees and helping identify family-centered candidates for local school boards.
At his day job, he’s a project superintendent overseeing large-scale government and commercial construction projects across New York and Connecticut. He also coaches Little League and volunteers with organizations like the Knights of Columbus and the Putnam County Firearm Owner’s Association.
“Putnam County deserves better – leaders who fight for taxpayers, protect life, support law enforcement, and stand up for American values,” said D’Angelo. “I’ve spoken with countless residents who feel frustrated, disappointed, and ready for change. I hear you, and I’m ready to fight for you.”
The Republican Primary will take place June 24, with early voting beginning June 14.
