Fair Street Closure Notice

Carmel residents and commuters are on notice that Fair Street will be closed from March 27 to April 5.

According to Putnam County Department of Public Works Commissioner Tommy Feighery, for those 10 days, only local traffic will be allowed as crews replace two aging culverts between DeColores Drive and Glenna Drive.

“We understand this is a major roadway in the Town of Carmel and we know a closure like this will be disruptive to residents, commuters, and nearby businesses,” he said. “But we’re reviewed all of our options, and this temporary closure is the most efficient and safest way to complete this critical phase of the project.”

By closing the road, contractors can work around the clock, using heavy equipment to remove the old culverts and put new precast ones in their place. Doing so will also speed up construction and reduce the overall cost of the project, according to Feighery.

“We’ve planned this closure to coincide with spring break at Carmel High School, which will help minimize traffic impacts in the area,” he said.

Detours will be marked and traffic control personnel will be onsite during this time. Feighery said local traffic will still be able to access their homes, but no through-traffic will be allowed.

“This culvert replacement is a major milestone in the Fair Street reconstruction project,” he said, noting that, later this year, people will see a new entrance to the high school, realignment of Vink Drive, new sidewalks, street lighting, traffic signals, a turning lane onto Route 52, and paving.

“When it is finalized later this fall, Fair Street will be safer, stronger, and better able to serve the greater Carmel community for decades to come,” said Feighery.
