While the U.S. gears up to celebrate 250 years since the American colonies declared independence from the British Empire with Rev 250 next year, Putnam County celebrated a milestone of its own last week – its 213th birthday.

It was June 12, 1812, when Putnam pulled away from Dutchess and became its own, independent county.

That history was celebrated last week during Putnam County Day on June 12 at the Whipple-Feeley Memorial Chapel at Veterans Memorial Park in Carmel. Former Gov. George Pataki was interviewed by fellow Garrison resident and philanthropist Geroge Whipple III, as they recounted the shaping of Putnam County.

Exemplary History Awards were presented to the Constitution Island Association, sculptor Michael Keropian, master storyteller Jonathan Kruk, Putnam Theatre Alliance, and Whipple.

The county will continue to host historical events leading up to Rev 250 next year. Stay tuned for announcements.
