Hot pancakes, sticky syrup, and live music warmed up the atmosphere – almost making up for the chilly weather – at the annual Maple Syrup Day on March 22 at Little Stony Point in Cold Spring.

There were maple lollipop drops, raffles, and dancing as a team of volunteers with the Little Stony Point Citizens Association served up more than 2,000 flapjacks, and local bands regaled the crowd with music from the visitor center porch.

“We are dedicated to the safe access, enjoyment, and preservation of our beautiful surroundings,” said LSPCA President John Martin. “And we’re proud of our partnership with New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation

Part of the Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve, Little Stony Point offers breathtaking views and a short hike around its shores, as well as a welcome to hikers headed for more demanding trails in the nearby Hudson Highlands. Founded in 1984, the LSPCA was the first of the New York State Parks Friends groups, and counts Pete Seeger among its founders.

“Maple season” typically runs from mid-February to early April – depending on night frosts, when sap flows from sugar maple trees.
