THIELLS – It was a true heartbreaker for the Mahopac High School baseball team.
With a 2-1 lead and two out in the top of the seventh and nobody on, the Wolf Pack were anticipating the final out of the Section 1, Class AA championship against No. 1 Rye. In fact, Mahopac was gathering in the dugout and ready to storm the field to celebrate.
Alas, it was not to be.
An error, a walk, a wild pitch, and a three-run double happened in what seemed like a nanosecond – probably in what felt like agonizing slow-motion to ’Pac – and the Garnets had a 5-2 victory and the title.
The game was played at neutral North Rockland H.S.
It was amazing on one end and devastating on the other.
Rye’s Jackson Pineault, down to his last strike, hit the double for the win. Mahopac centerfielder Nate Mascoll nearly made a diving catch on the play.
Putnam Valley Baseball
The Putnam Valley High School baseball team won its second consecutive Section 1, Class B title by beating Pawling, 5-2, at neutral North Rockland H,S. Ironically, the Tigers lost to the same Pawling team a day earlier in the double elimination tournament.
Junior Eli Pierce was nearly flawless on the mound as he pitched into the seventh inning for Putnam Valley to earn the victory. Matt Quinn and Ryan Dinizo both drove in two runs for the Tigers.
PV was scheduled to play in the first round of the New York State playoffs against Chester on Saturday.
Haldane Softball
For a team that nobody knew what to expect from at the beginning of the season, it was a great run.
The Haldane High School softball team made it to the Section 1, Class B finals before losing to Dobbs Ferry, 4-1. It was the first championship for the Eagles in 16 years. The game was played at neutral North Rockland H.S.
Eighth-grader Victoria Baron shut down the Blue Devils to earn the pitching victory and guide Dobbs into the state playoffs where it was scheduled to meet Spackenkill in the first round June 5.
Haldane finished 17-6. Allegra Clementson had three hits for the Devils.
