The Mahopac Central School District will hold a budget revote June 17 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., in the high school gymnasium.
The district is presenting a revised budget to the community, which represents a 0 percent tax levy increase and the same budget-to-budget increase of 1.89 percent.
This includes no reduction in expenditures proposed in the $145.1 million budget that was presented in the May 20 vote. It uses $955,000 in additional state aid that resulted from the New York State budget adoption May 8, allowing the district to keep the same expenditures and lower the tax levy to 0 percent.
If this vote fails and the school board is forced to go with a contingent budget, any and all non-essential purchases will be denied, including new equipment such as security enhancements that are part of the 2025-26 proposed budget. In addition, no public use of school buildings and grounds will be permitted without a fee.
Also under a contingent budget, the administrative component of the budget cannot comprise a greater percentage of the total budget than it did in the prior year’s budget or the last defeated budget, whichever is less.
Additionally, the tax levy under a contingent budget cannot exceed the amount levied in the prior year.
The original budget proposal was voted down by a tally of 1,248 to 1,189, with a proposal to establish a capital project reserve also voted down, 1,223 to 1,200.
A bus purchase proposal was approved 1,246 to 1,190.
The district is not able to place the proposition to establish a capital reserve fund back on the ballot during a revote. Therefore, district administration recommends that the school board consider using proceeds from the sale of property to be placed in a tax reduction reserve, or place $5 million that is anticipated as excess fund balance from this year’s budget due to tax certiorari overfunding in reserves.
It will cost the district approximately $41,000 to hold the revote.

For the school board to threaten the public with not being able to use the school grounds if the budget doesn’t pass is just appalling. We need to remind the school board that WE the tax payers, paid for and keep it going to our tax dollars. And we pay their salaries. To hold the school budget passing over our heads is disgraceful, disgusting and wrong.
