The epicenter of the Section 1 high school soccer world will be in Mahopac – for both the boys’ and girls’ programs.

Both Wolf Pac teams were duly rewarded for an excellent regular season as the Section 1 tournaments got underway recently. The Mahopac boys were seeded first in Class AA while the girls were seeded third.

The Mahopac boys finished 12-2-2 in the regular season and 8-0 in league play. They will play the winner of the out-bracket game between Suffern and Yorktown and possess one of the stingiest defenses seen in recent memory.

In the same tournament, Brewster was seeded 15th and scheduled to play No. 18 Saunders in its first game in Class AA.

In Class A, 12th-seeded Putnam Valley was scheduled to open at No. 5 Tappan Zee.

For the girls, a local rivalry.

In Class AA, 14th-seeded Brewster was scheduled to open No. 3 Mahopac. No. 12 Carmel was slated to meet up with No. 5 Clarkstown North. No. 15 Putnam Valley was earmarked to go to 2nd-seeded Ardsley in Class A.

Field Hockey

The Section 1 field hockey tournament begins with play in three enrollment classes after seedings were determined recently. Games are at the school with the better seed until the finals, which will all be played at neutral Nyack High School.

In Class A, No. 6 Mahopac was scheduled to open at No. 3 White Plains.

Brewster was the 10th seed in Class B but was scheduled to open on the road at No. 7 Rye.

And in Class C, 4th-seeded Putnam Valley was scheduled to play a quarterfinal game at No. 5 North Salem.

Girls’ Volleyball

The sole premise of the Haldane High School girls’ volleyball team is to get great contributions from great all-around players.

Case in point: a 3-1 victory over Hamilton. Scores were 25-18, 25-15, 17-25, and 25-12.

Liv Holmbo had 10 kills, nine service points, and three aces for the Blue Devils.

Emily McPherson tallied eight kills, 11 digs, 10 service points, and six aces for the winners. Anya Mercurio registered four kills, eight digs, 15 service points, and nine aces; while Maria McFadden had 15 digs and five service points.

Carmel 3, Brewster 2 – Brewster’s Jade McCown had five aces, 17 service points, seven kills, three blocks, and 10 digs, but it was the Rams who came away with the 18-25, 25-12, 25-13, 20-25, 15-12 win.
