A man was arrested last week after causing a scare in Patterson.

According to Putnam County Acting Sherrif Brian Hess, shortly after 5 p.m. Oct. 16, deputies were called to an incident involving a male subject dressed in full camouflage who allegedly menaced a neighbor with what appeared to be a firearm. The man then barricaded himself inside his residence and alluded to having an explosive device.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiations Team responded to the scene, and at about 9:30 p.m., the suspect was taken into custody.

Shortly after, a fire was discovered inside the apartment. As of the time of the report, it was unclear if the fire was accidental or started intentionally, and its cause was under investigation.

Also responding to the scene were the Kent, Carmel, and Brewster police departments; New York State Police; Patterson Fire Department; and various EMS and volunteer first-responders.

The investigation remains active and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
