New Playground Opens at JFK Elem.
Brewster, teachers, staff, and students gathered Sept. 14 to officially open the new playground at JFK Elementary School. The site includes arching spider webs, tall slides, a climbing wall, steps and bridges, bouncy chairs, a merry-go-round, and a specially designated area for pre-kindergarten students.
“The design and vision of the playground was a team effort,” said Assistant Principal Eileen Cruz, who spearheaded the planning committee. “We met with and got feedback from our occupational therapists, physical therapists, teachers, and staff.”
A group of second-graders thanked district administrators, as well as members of the Board of Education for helping to make the initiative possible.
“We students of JFK thank you for our new playground,” they said in unison. “We love it so much because we love to play. Thank you for your kindness... We promise to play safe and have fun and make friends.”
As soon as the ribbon was cut, students got to play on the new equipment.
“The rock wall is challenging but really fun,” said Lincoln Cullen.
Lila Gianfrancesco picked the merry-go-round. “That’s my favorite,” she said. “It makes you dizzy.”
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Gosh said the new playground wouldn’t have been possible without families’ advocacy.
“We are grateful for the ongoing support of the community which allows us to enrich and differentiate experiences for all students,” she said.
