Philipstown Behavioral Hub Highlights Overdose Awareness

The historic bandstand at the Cold Spring waterfront became a sanctuary of shared grief, healing, and urgent advocacy as Putnam County community members gathered to observe International Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31.

This year’s event marked the 25th global anniversary of the movement under the theme “25 Years On. Still Needed.” Brought together by both heartache and joy were grieving families, recovery advocates, and Hudson Valley neighbors to confront an ongoing public health crisis while honoring the lives of those lost to substance use.

Organized by the Philipstown Behavioral Hub and supported by local health groups, the evening combined several memorial traditions with a clear, community-wide call to inspire more action against human overdosing.

The centerpiece of the evening was a luminaria ceremony in which paper lanterns inscribed with handwritten messages, names, and photographs of deceased loved ones cast a warm glow along the Hudson River shoreline.

Throughout the event, speakers emphasized one important theme in regard to the biggest combatant of the overdose epidemic crisis in the U.S. – prevention. 

Representatives from the Philipstown Behavioral Hub and Prevention Council of Putnam were on hand distributing more than 100 boxes of Narcan and providing rapid, on-site training to attendees.

Local leaders emphasized that the crisis remains deeply felt in smaller Hudson Valley enclaves, while mentioning several times that the best way to fight addiction and overdosing simply boils down to education, and that being able to recognize what an overdose looks like can and does save lives.
