Private Schools May Still Compete in Section 1 – For Now

LATHAM – The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Appeal Panel unanimously overturned Section 1’s amendment that would create a separate classification for non-public schools.

That means private and parochial schools such as Ursuline, Albertus Magnus, Keio, and the Leffell School can continue to compete for Section 1 and state championships. For now.

The section had previously voted unanimously to ban private and parochial schools from competing for public high school Section 1 and state titles.

The ongoing difference of opinion is likely to end up in a state court.

The NYSPHSAA said that Section 1 was out of bounds in making such a ruling.

“This decision affirms the importance of fairness, consistency, and due process in educational athletics,” said Ursuline President Dr. Colleen Melnyk. “We are grateful to the Appeal Panel for its careful review and to Albertus Magnus and Keio Academy for their partnership throughout this process. We now look forward to moving ahead in a spirit of collaboration and continuing to provide meaningful opportunities for all student-athletes.”

But, again, this has been a years-long debate that is likely to continue.
