The Carmel High School football team recently hosted county rival Brewster for a game that paid tribute to the U.S. military.

The Carmel football program is partnering with Guardian Revival, a nonprofit organization that offers free mental health, wellness, and community programs for military, veterans, first responders, and their families. Through the team’s fundraising efforts, the Carmel football community has raised more than $2,000 for the agency.

To say it was a poignant moment – for all the fans in attendance – is an understatement.

For posterity’s sake and recordkeeping, the host Rams beat the Bears 23-21. Carmel continued its football revival after the last two seasons of consecutive 1-7 records. The team has won four of its first five games under new Head Coach Alex Beauchesne, a former Carmel standout. That includes a win over another county rival, Mahopac.

But football was secondary on this night, pardon the pun.

It was touching for these high school students to honor the men and women of the military. And it’s all par for the course under Beauchesne.

The coaching staff has placed an emphasis on developing the players as young men – teaching accountability, responsibility, teamwork, leadership, respect, and the importance of giving back. The players are encouraged to understand that being part of a team means being part of something bigger than yourself.

Sounds like being in the military, doesn’t it?
