She’s like a sponge, soaking in all that she can… Even practice.

It’s the midway point of the season and for Putnam Valley High School volleyball player Catie Caputo, it’s the last go-around – not just for the season, but for her high school career. She is a senior and will graduate in the spring.

“I’m beyond upset,” she said. “This is my favorite time of year. I’ve been on varsity since my freshman year. Volleyball is my life. I love it when it’s school volleyball. All my friends can come to the game and (on the weekends) we can walk over and watch the football team play. The leaves are pretty colors. It’s just a great time of year. And these girls have been amazing friends and teammates. This is my last year so I’m trying to take it all in.”

The bonds of friendship and athletic camaraderie will hurt the most, said Caputo. “We clicked from day one,” she said. “We are all in a group chat …”

The athlete turned wistful.

“It’s just such a great life,” she said. “We have a love for each other. That’s the reason why I don’t even want to leave practice early. I want to be there with everybody. It’s sad in a way, because everything is just so special – every moment. I can’t stop thinking about last year when I was at the Westchester County Center (for sectionals). I just kept looking around because it almost didn’t feel real.”

As much as she loves her present situation, Caputo said she is looking forward to the next challenge. She would like to go to college and, yes, play volleyball.

“I can’t imagine my life without volleyball,” she said. “I play year-round. Volleyball is my all-time sport.”
