EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Dale Meritt’s voice was coarse from screaming.
“I’m originally from Carmel,” he said, raising his hand. “France all the way!”
Yes, the World Cup soccer tournament has touched even Putnam County.
Meritt and several friends were at Met Life Stadium to watch France play Senegal last week. France won the game and qualified for the knockout round of 32 in the tourney. France is Meritt’s team, but his mind was never far from the Hudson Valley.
There are four players from New York on the U.S. men’s national team, including Tyler Adams of nearby Wappingers Falls.
“You can’t help but root for that kid,” said Meritt. “You can’t help but root for the whole team. That would definitely be an experience.”
So far, the entire quadrennial tournament has been an experience for American fans. The culture has been amazing, including the Scottish team fans known as the Tartan Army nearly drinking Boston dry of beer.
And we haven’t even mentioned the fascination with ranch dressing.
“Heck,” said Meritt, “I’d be happy to send them some Hidden Valley.”
Already taken care of. What, you think the Hidden Valley people would miss a marketing opportunity?
“You know, some people think soccer is slow and boring, but they don’t call it The Beautiful Game for nothing,” said Meritt.
